Baptist Chapel, Cote, Oxfordshire

Listed Grade II*

The site of Cote Chapel was acquired in 1703-4 by a group of worshippers which previously met at Longworth on the other side of the Thames. In 1739-40 the Chapel was enlarged or more probably rebuilt to its present size, the capacity being increased in 1756 by the addition of a gallery. In 1859 the pulpit was removed from the south to the west wall, the galleries were altered and rebuilt against the other three walls, and the seating was renewed. The pipe organ, built by Henry Jones, was installed in 1861.

The Chapel has stone walls and a double roof covered in the local stone slate. The truncated front gable incorporates a screen wall across the central valley surmounted by a stone panel with scrolled ends, possibly added in the 19th century. In the burial ground are many 18th- century carved headstones.

HCT has completed a programme of repairs including the provision of new kitchens, WCs and a committee room to return the Chapel to community uses such as concerts and conferences and to allow for the continuance of occasional services of worship.
