I have been unable to find Edward or Adelaide on the 1891 census and their children are scattered but by 1901 they and their children are all living together once again.   News article in the District Times, May 16th 1890 Sensational elopement at Saint Mary Cray Shameful desertion of a wife A sensation has been caused in the village of St Mary Cray this week by the elopement of Edward Dutton, a timekeeper employed in the “rag house” in Messrs Joynson's paper mill, with a young girl employed in the same department. Dutton, who leaves behind him a wife and four children, the youngest of whom is only six weeks old, has lived in St Mary Cray for some years. He was formerly a member of the Army Service Corps , with which he served in India and other parts of the world. His discharge was purchased by his wife on their marriage - her he now leaves behind. Afterwards they settled in St Mary Cray, where the man obtained a situation in the mill. During the past two or three years, Dutton has taken part in religious mission work of various kinds in the place. For some time he energetically cooperated with a visiting Salvation Army corps, and afterwards attended both dissenting places of worship in turn. Latterly, however he has gone to the Orpington Parish Church , and had been chosen leader of the drum and fife band , inaugurated by the Reverend A E Stantial, the late curate, which position he still held at the time of his flight. His discourse is said to have been distinguished by its apparent piety, and his anxiety for the spiritual welfare of his acquaintances was often found to be objectionable. On Saturday evening Dutton was seen by his wife packing a bundle of clothing which, in answer to her inquiry, he remarked contained only his band uniform, which he was about to return to the maker for alteration. He then left the house: but Mrs Dutton, soon afterwards going upstairs, she saw the uniform lying on a chair. Her suspicions being aroused she went to the St Mary Cray station, where however she failed to hear anything of her missing husband. Subsequent inquiries however, proved that on leaving the house he proceeded to Orpington station on the South Eastern Railway, where he met Minnie Cousins, the girl in question, and took two tickets for New Cross. The pair left by the next train, and nothing has since been heard of them, though the rumour is current that their destination was Plymouth on route for Australia. Under the present law no steps can be taken to arrest the flight of the pair, unless the family become nominally chargeable to the Union, and the Guardians of the Poor decide to prosecute for desertion , and it is highly probable that the pair are now beyond reach. The general feeling is one of intense sympathy for the deserted wife, who is universally esteemed. There had been no provision made by her husband for the future maintenance of his family, and it has been ascertained that both he and the girl Cousins had taken with them all the money they could raise. Dutton’s age is said to be about 35. His companion is 21 years old. For some time she had lived next door to Dutton and his family.
