  The Robbins Family http://history.wiltshire.gov.uk/community/getconcise.php?id=254 The Robbins family had lived and farmed in Woodborough since the seventeenth century, and occupied the manor farm from 1802. Samuel Robbins, a leading figure in the promotion of the Kennett and Amesbury Turnpike Trust, was a member of this family. Not having the acreage nor the potential for agricultural improvement of many neighbouring parishes, Woodborough’s farming community welcomed the opportunities to diversify offered by the completion of the Kennet and Avon Canal in 1810. In the following year Samuel Robbins began to build a wharf alongside the canal at Honeystreet (then in the extreme north of Woodborough parish, although recently transferred to Alton). It became not only an important distribution centre for the surrounding villages (hence his interest in the turnpike), but also fostered a successful boatbuilding enterprise. To an area of chronic depressed agricultural wages this nineteenth-century industrial estate was an important source of revenue – a labourer in 1830 who could earn eight shillings for a week in the fields might earn twenty at the wharf. The wharf’s clock tower of 1854, and some other Victorian buildings (many rebuilt after a fire, also in 1854), have been demolished in recent years. But a tall chimney (incongruously attached to a greenhouse) and some industrial and domestic buildings remain, together with a sawmill and the Barge Inn - this, however, lies just beyond the old and new parish boundaries, in Stanton St Bernard. Honeystreet is still an attractive industrial hamlet, of a type not usually associated with Wiltshire, and its future, as canal leisure grows in popularity, seems assured.
