  		India - Asansol Club Built in the year 1917 as a club of British Indian Railway officials, and then a cine hall. The building was renamed as Subhas Institute on the eve of 15th August 1947. Finally it was closed for public & redeveloped as a Railway property - Library. The building stands testimony to the city's colonial past & architecture. Keywords: Picture

  In 1917, Asansol and the broader Bengal region were part of the British Indian Empire, which was heavily involved in World War I. The 49th Bengalis Regiment was officially formed on July 1, 1917, in Karachi (though recruited from Bengal), this was the only unit composed entirely of ethnic Bengalis during the war. Bengal, particularly Kolkata (Calcutta), served as a hub for logistical support, with Indian seaman serving on patrol ships in the Bay of Bengal. Asansol itself was a significant railway hub for the Bengal-Nagpur Railway, which was vital for transporting troops and goods. The 49th Bengalis were trained in Karachi and sent to Mesopotamia in August 1917. Bengal-Nagpur Railway The line covered Calcutta to Nagpur (toward Bombay); Calcutta to Waltair (toward madras); and Bilaspur to Katni. 1882 Survey commenced. 1884 A line of 149 miles. 1885 Neilson and Co supplied compound locomotives to the Bengal-Nagpur Railway Company. 1887 The Bengal Nagpur Railway (BNR) Company was incorporated to take over from the Nagpur Chhattisgarh Railway and to convert the line to broad gauge. The work was completed in 1888. 1887 State owned, company operated railway. 1891 Line opened. G. A. Anderson is chief engineer. Total length of 830 miles of which 620 miles connects Nagpur with Asenhole, a station on the East Indian Railway , 135 miles from Calcutta. The new line shortens the distance between Bombay and Calcutta by 127 miles. A 161-mile branch line (258 km) that connected Bilaspur to Umaria coal mine was built and linked to the existing line from Umaria to Katni (1891). By 1894 862 miles of line. By the turn of the twentieth century, work on the Calcutta-Bombay and Calcutta-Madras lines were completed. Through the first half of the twentieth century work on the BNR lines progressed steadily. 1901 The Cuttack to Waltair section of the East Coast State Railway was absorbed into the BNR and gave an important route to Madras. 1905-11 The Agent was John Manson. 1910 Officers: R. Miller , Managing Director; John Manson , Agent (Calcutta); H. H. Jellett , Chief Engineer; A. S. Bailey , Chief Mechanical Engineer; A. M. Clark , Traffic Manager. 1918 Officers: T. R. Wynne , Managing Director; G. C. Godfrey , Agent; A. M. Clark , Acting Agent and Traffic Manager; H. H. Jellett , Chief Engineer; A. C. Carr , Chief Mechanical Engineer. In 1921 the Talcher coalfields were connected by a railway line starting from Nergundi. In 1931, the Raipur-Vizianagaram line was set up, which connected the east coast with the Central Province. By the end of the 1930s the BNR owned the largest narrow gauge network in the country. 1944 October 1st. The BNR management was taken over by the British Indian government and continued to be called by that name until 14 April 1952, when it was amalgamated with the East Indian Railway to form one of six newly carved zones of the Eastern Railway .
