- Muriel remembers going g on the bus from Hammersmith to Mortlake to visit her Uncle Alf and Aunt Lottie and her cousins Florrie, Daisy and Vi. They lived in a small house in Worple Street, just off of North Worple Way and it had a vine with grapes growing in the back garden.
Uncle Alf died and he was the first of the family to be cremated rather than be buried, which led Fred and Maud to decide that they would also be cremated when the time came rather than buy a grave.
Alf's death left Aunt Lottie with the three girls and at some point Maud fell out with Auntie Lottie (no one seems to know the cause of the fall out!) - which put an end to the family visits to Mortlake! Muriel didn't see Florrie again for some years, until Florrie and her husband and small son, Derrick, came to visit them in Hammersmith.
After this, Derrick mentioned the visit to his Nan (Lottie) and she was very put out - so much so that Lottie refused to let Florrie across her doostep. This situation never resolved and Florrie had no further contact with her mother or sisters during the rest of her life.
- Muriel remembers coming on the bus from Hammersmith to visit Aunt Ada and her cousin Roy who was then living in Avenue Gardens, East Sheen. Avenue Gardens was a cul-de-sac and Ada lived in the very last house at the bottom of the road, overlooking the cemetery.
- When Muriel was 21 years old she had an ingrowing toenail. Rather than treat the nail conservatively as they would today, Muriel was admitted to The West London Hospital in Hammersmith where they proceded to amputate the top joint of the offending big toe. Somewhat drastic treatment! For years later the missing toe joint resulted in footcare problems and affected the way she walked. Over the years, she also suffered many vaicose ulcers on her ankles and the pain of these, and the way in which they had to be bandaged for months on end, also caused her to walk with consistently supinated feet. These, together with the missing toe, had a negative impact on her balance in latter years.
- Eulogy read by family friend, David Jealous, at the Thanksgiving Service for Muriel's life on November 12th 2014.
Muriel was born in Hammersmith on the 12th of April 1922, the youngest child of Fred and Maud Berrett. She had two older siblings: her beloved brother, John and her sister, Honor. Although she was very close to both of them as they got older, poor Honor often got into trouble and took the blame for the actions of her naughty little sister!
John, who was 13 when Muriel was born, was apparently very proud of his new baby sister and rushed in to school with the news of her arrival as soon as she was born. "Well, as soon as she is three years old you bring her to school!" his teacher said. Having to start school at such a tender age is about the only thing that Muriel held against her brother, who could usually do no wrong in her eyes.
Her brother John was a member of the Boys’ Brigade at West End Baptist Church in Hammersmith and he took Muriel along to church with him. It was there that she first grew to love the Lord and was baptised.
During WW1, Muriel’s father had been in the army and for part of the time he was billeted with a family in Chesham, Buckinghamshire. This resulted in a close friendship between the two families and the Berrett family frequently escaped Hammersmith and visited their friends ‘in the country’. Muriel spoke often, and with much affection, of her love for Bucks and the fun she had there as a child… and it was a place she continued to love to visit for well over 50 years.
When Muriel left school at the age of 14 she got a job as an upholstress at Derry & Toms in Kensington. When the war came, making curtains and soft furnishings was naturally a low priority and she was required to do 'war work'. She joined the staff of Osrams in Hammersmith and spent the war making valves for aircraft. After the war, she again took up work as an upholstress, but this time at Harrods in Knightsbridge. Over the years she made endless curtains for home, family – and even for the Gaussen Hall of East Sheen Baptist Church.
In 1946 Muriel was invited to a friend’s wedding on Putney Common. Whilst there, she caught the eye of a friend of the groom. Raymond took her out the very next day and then went back home to Kent to tell his mother that he’d met a girl. She was horrified! ‘Don’t you bring any of those London floozies home’ he was warned. Despite this, they quickly became a couple and there was apparently a lot of commuting done at weekends between Hammersmith and Orpington!
After the death of her mother, Muriel moved across the river to Richmond and she began attending Duke Street Baptist Church. She was joined there by Raymond when they eventually married in 1959. Sadly, having been engaged for almost 13 years, they only had 12 years together as husband and wife as Raymond died in 1971.
In 1960, Linda was born and Muriel and Raymond moved to East Sheen. In 1968 Muriel transferred her church membership from Duke Street to East Sheen Baptist Church and she remained a member there for the rest of her life. After Raymond's death she returned to work, initially in the kitchen of the Vineyard School in Richmond and then as a shop assistant at W H Smiths in Richmond until she retired in 1982.
Family was important to Muriel and she loved spending time with her niece Angela and her family in Essex. She loved being a great aunt to Lucinda and Jonathan, and was proud of her great great nephew Lucas. Unfortunately, she was never able to know or understand that, with the arrival of little Erin earlier this year, she also had a great great niece. Although she saw less of her nieces and nephews on Raymond’s side of the family, she was always interested to hear news of Wendy, Colin, Clive, Joan and Brian and their respective families.
Muriel willingly admitted that she wasn’t at all adventurous and had little desire to go too far from home. But she had many happy memories of holidays in Cornwall with Raymond and their friends, Maurice and Bubbles - and in later years of the holidays and fun that she shared with her church friends: Marjorie Allan, Mary Ferguson, Joyce Bonnet, Jenny and David, Val & Paul and Ann Bennett.
Muriel loved to sing and for several years during the 1970s and 80s she was a member of the London Crusader Chorale. Most Sundays she left home early in the morning to join the Chorale as they visited prisons, care homes and churches in Bristol, Ipswich and all places inbetween. She even developed her sense of adventure enough to twice visit Romania with the Chorale in the early 1980s.
Muriel was a faithful member of East Sheen Baptist Church and the Women’s Fellowship here for over 40 years. She was a keen supporter of various charities and missions and for many years she happily relieved church members of their shillings for the Leprosy Mission! She avidly read the magazines that regularly arrived from Mission Aviation Fellowship, the Open Air Mission and Tearfund and was a great prayer warrior for the family and friends that she loved and the missions that she supported.
Recent years have been hard for Muriel. A ‘funny turn’ in 2010 resulted in prolonged stays in hospital and then heart surgery. She never really recovered from this and failing eyesight, impaired hearing and the onset of dementia left her longing for heaven.
One of her favourite hymns was How Great Thou Art which ends with the words:
When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow in humble adoration,
And there proclaim, My God, how great thou art!
Her family are glad that Muriel is now safely home.
- Information given to The Summers & Greville House as an introduction to Muriel, her family and interests:
Muriel was born in Hammersmith, West London on April 12th 1922. She was the third child of Fred and Maud Berrett. Muriel had two siblings, her beloved older brother, John, and her sister, Honor. (John died in 2006 and Honor in 1988.)
After leaving school, Muriel worked as an Upholstress for the famous stores of Harrods (in Knightsbridge) and Derry & Toms (in Kensington). During the war she had to leave this work in order to take up ‘war work’ and during this time she worked at Osrams in Hammersmith, making valves for aircraft.
Much of Muriel’s childhood was spent in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, visiting family friends, Will, Else and Joyce Bates.
Muriel met her future husband, Raymond Dutton, when attending a mutual friend’s wedding in Putney. Raymond was a friend of the groom and Muriel a friend of the bride. They married in March 1959, having been engaged for 13 years!! Sadly, they then only had 12 years together as Raymond died in 1971 as the direct result of an illness he contracted whilst serving with the army in Italy during the war.
Muriel and Raymond enjoyed many holidays in Devon and Cornwall with their friends, Maurice and Bubbles. Maurice and Raymond met in the army and remained life-long friends.
Muriel and Raymond’s daughter, Linda, was born in February 1960. She works as an administrator within the charity, education and health sectors. Muriel and Linda have been ‘flat mates’ since Raymond’s death, living together, but each following their own interests.
Until she lost her sight due to glaucoma and macular degeneration, Muriel’s hobbies have included embroidery, knitting, quilting and sewing. She was a member of a choir and spent many weekends singing in churches and prisons throughout south-east England. She enjoyed reading, classical music and watching television – but lack of sight and dementia has taken all of these hobbies away and she has become increasingly isolated.
Muriel is a committed Christian and has been a member of East Sheen Baptist Church for the last 40 years. Over the years she has enjoyed many holidays with her church friends Marjorie, Mary and Joyce (all now gone). However, her friend Ann continues to visit her, and friends Jenny & David and Val & Paul remain close friends.
Muriel’s niece Angela (John’s daughter) is married to Colin and they live in Stansted, Essex – but visit as often as possible. Their daughter, Lucinda, together with her husband, Ben, and son, Lucas, live in Norfolk.
Muriel loves animals and birds, and has always had a special love of donkeys and owls. Her beloved cat, Purrrcy, will be staying at home to keep Linda company… but may come and visit occasionally!
Linda has been Muriel’s sole carer since 2010, and gave up work in January 2013 to become her full-time carer. Since then, Vascular Dementia has taken its toll and a move to The Summers is the next step…
