  Two of Fred's brothers had interesting careers. One was part of a team that constructed the Ryan Dam and another worked for the Hong Kong Police - however it is not known which brother did which job. Fred's father or grandfather was the inventor of the cue rest (called the spider) used in the game of snooker.
