  Thomas was only aged 4 when his mother died. He had no schooling and left Wiltshire for London when he was 18 years old after hearing that London's streets were 'paved with gold'. He looked a picture of health and would eat anything - yet suffered with stomach trouble. He worked in a large food store in Hackney as a cheesemonger and was used as an example of fitness to encourage food sales. He wrote eloquent love letters (poetry and verse) despite his lack of schooling. He was a great gardener and painted beautiful flowers (pink Cosmos) on kitchen cupboard doors. He served in the 1914-18 war with the Royal Artillery in Eypres, France based with a regiment from Romsey, Hampshire. He lied about his age to enlist and was invalided out with a war disability pension. He was a member of the druids and kept a 'strange' druid picture on his wall as long as he lived. He was bad tempered, swore and drank, but was also a ladies man. He died from ulcers in hospital.
