  LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Ninety-Years-old Singer at St Paul's Cathedral On April 4, Henry J Dutton, alto Vicar-choral of St Paul's, attains his ninetieth birthday, and it must be of interest to singing men, and your readers generally, to recall his remarkable record of service and devotion to church music. He was born at Bampton in Oxfordshire, April 4, 1853, and on his tenth birthday was elected a chorister at St John's College, Oxford, where he served for six years. On January 25, 1874, be commenced as alto Lay-clerk at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, leaving that post for Ripon Cathedral in January 1876. He was appointed Vicar-choral of St Paul's on January 8, 1878, where, in his sixty-sixth year of service he carries on daily in spite of the difficulties of the present time. [ie. WWII] In all he has sung the daily services of the church for seventy-five years - this is probably a record. At St Paul's he has served under four deans and five organists, viz Sir John Stainer, Sir George Martin, Dr Charles Macpherson, Sir Stanley Marchant, and Mr J Dykes Bower. His fund of reminiscences is a large one and he is an interesting companion and colleague. For twenty-two years he trained a choir of boys who sang professionally in all parts of the British Isles, and many of these today will like to know that he still daily sings evensong in the Cathedral he has so faithfully served.
