• Notes

  Raymond served with the 2/5th Battalion of the Queen's Royal Regiment (West Surrey) during WW2. Joined in 1942 (aged 20). Trained initially in Maidstone, then as a Bren Gun Carrier Driver at Rayleigh in Essex and Boxford, Suffolk. Travelled by boat from Birkenhead to Cape Town, then on to India (Deolali aka Doolally) up the Persian Gulf to Iraq. Joined the 8th Army (Desert Rats) in North Africa before moving on to Italy (Salerno) for the 'final push'. Became ill with Rheumatic Fever in 1944 whilst in Italy and was sent home to England on a hospital ship. This illness resulted in damage to his heart and he experienced heart problems for the rest of his life. Open heart surgery followed during the 1960's and he died in August 1971. Raymond was a member of The Queen's Royal Regiment Old Comrades' Association. Elm Villas, where Raymond was born, were built in 1898 at the northern end of the High Street in St Mary Cray between the pond and the junction of the High Street and Chislehurst Road. CHURCH Raymond's parents attended The Temple (URC Church) in St Mary Cray and were both active members there. Raymond was taken to Sunday School at The Temple. When he met Muriel, he was not actively attending church but began attending DUKE STREET BAPTIST CHURCH when visiting Muriel at weekends. He was baptised as an adult believer and then married there. Towards the end of his life he drifted away from church having been upset by something or someone.
