• Notes

  While not the eldest son, William was obviously a very strong and successful person. In 1822 he was described as the "Sovereign of the Town" [of Carlow] (Carloviana vol.1. nos. 1-4. p. 56.) There are gaps and uncertainties in the information about William's family. However with luck and more work some of these may be filled. His death entry in the parish register says he was aged 87, and was "Of Tullow St, Carlow". In 1830 he is recorded, with his son Robert, as having voted (not surprisingly) against the repeal of the Act of Union, which had abolished the Irish Parliament. (Ref. Irish Ancestor, date missing) The British War Office List of Militia in 1805 includes a Lieutenant William Fishbourne in the entries for Carlow who joined on August 15 1801.
