  Duttons' stores on Bridge Street, Bampton established reportedly in 1751 and certainly by 1793, was a general grocers and, at various times, tallow chandlers, chemists, and oil merchants, and continued until the 1980s. Duttons' stores on Bridge Street, established reportedly in 1751 and certainly by 1793, was a general grocers and, at various times, tallow chandlers, chemists, and oil metchants, and continued until the 1980s (source: Witney Gazette 13/3/1980, advertisement)... Another butcher, farmer and landowner, William Andrews (d. 1856) later called himself gentleman, and the Duttons also acquired several houses... Sunday opening may have been common before 1837, when local butchers and other unanimously agreed to abolish it... During the 20th century Bampton largely retained its range of retailers and tradesmen, remaining a comparitively self-contained community. By 1895 Duttons' stores provided banking services... [9] In the Name of God Amen I Richard Dutton of Bampton in the County of Oxford Tallow Chandler being through the mercy of God in perfect Health of Body and Soundness of Mind Memory and Understanding do make this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following that is to say First I desire that all my just Debts Funeral Expences and the Expences of proving of this my Will be fully paid and satisfied by my Trustees and Executor hereinafter named Then I give and devise unto my dear beloved Wife Catherine for and during her natural Life One Annuity or clear Yearly Rent or Sum of Twenty pounds of lawful Money of the united Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland (free of Taxes and all other deductions whatsoever) to be issuing and payable out of all my Messuages Buildings Gardens Orchard and Premises situate in Weald in the said parish of Bampton and now in the respective Occupation of myself my Son William Dutton and Miss Padbury and to be paid and payable by equal half Yearly payments in each Year on every twenty fourth day of June and twenty fifth day of December the first payment to be made on such of the said days as shall happen three Months after my decease and I do hereby subject and make chargeable all and every of the same Messuages Buildings Gardens and premises and to the payment of the same Annuity Yearly Rent or Sum of Twenty Pounds accordingly in Case the said Annuity or Yearly Sum or any part thereof shall be behind and unpaid by the Space of Twenty One days _______ after either of the aforesaid days whereon the same ought to be paid as aforesaid Then and so often it shall and may be lawful for my said Wife Catherine her agent or bailiff to enter upon all or any part of the said Premises charged with the payment of the said Annuity as aforesaid and then and there to Distrain on all or any part of the Effects upon the said premises for the same or for so much thereof as shall be in arrear And all Costs and Charges occasioned by Non payment thereof but that the said Annuity so given and devised to my said Wife shall not be at the disposal of or liable to or with the Payment of any Debt or Debts of any future Husband she may happen at any time to marry with but her receipt alone shall be at all times a sufficient Discharge for the same not withstanding her Coverture Also I give devise and bequeath unto my daughter Mary Wife of Robert Smith of Weald aforesaid Joiner for and during her natural Life One Annuity or clear Yearly Rent or Sum of Ten pounds of lawful Money free of all Taxes and all other Deductions whatsoever to be issuing and payable out of the aforesaid Messuages Buildings Gardens Orchard and Premises to be paid and payable by equal half Yearly payments in each Year (that is to say) on the twenty fourth day of June and twenty fifth day of December the first payment thereof to begin and be made on such of the said days as shall first and next happen after the decease of her Husband the said Robert Smith with a like power of Distraining for the same or any part thereof on Non payment of the said Annuity Yearly rent or Sum of Ten pounds or any part thereof with all Costs and Charges attending such distress and Sale thereof as is hereinbefore given to my said Wife Catherine but that the said Annuity so given and devised to my said Daughter Mary shall not be at the disposal of or liable to or with the payment of any Debt or Debts of any future husband she may at any time happen to marry with but her Receipt alone shall be to my Trustees and Executor at all times a sufficient Discharge for the same notwithstanding her Coverture Also I give and bequeath unto my said Wife Catherine the Sum of Twenty pounds to be paid her immediately after my decease out of my personal Estate Also I give and bequeath unto my said Wife Six Silver Tea Spoons, Two Silver Table Spoons and Two Silver Salts which I desire may be delivered to her immediately after my decease Also I give and bequeath unto Richard Holliday and Elizabeth his Wife the Sum of One hundred Pounds to be paid to them or the Survivor of them immediately after the said Richard Holliday shall have settled All Legacies and Accounts with his Uncle Mr Richard Holliday of London (a joint Executor named in the last Will and Testament of Michael Holliday deceased) and the Legatees also named in the said Will of the said Michael Holliday deceased so as to exonerate and discharge my Executor from the Covenants Articles claims and agreements which are mentioned and expressed in a certain deed bearing date on or about the twenty eight day of September One thousand eight hundred and nine wherein I am a party and Covenanted with and for the said Richard Holliday of Bampton aforesaid performing and fulfilling the same by my said Trustees and Executor out of my real and personal Estate Also I give and bequeath unto Susanna Wife of Leonard Carter the Younger of Bampton aforesaid wheelwright the Sum of One Guinea to be paid her within twelve months next after my decease Also I give and bequeath unto Richard Dutton Carter my Grandson the Sum of five pounds to be paid to him when he arrives at the Age of twenty one Years Also I give and bequeath unto my Grand children as follows to Ann Charlwood the Sum of Ten pounds to Elizabeth Charlwood William Charlwood and Mary Charlwood the Sum of five pounds each to be paid to them within twelve months next after my decease by my Trustees and Executor hereinafter named out of my personal Estate and Effects Also I give and bequeath unto Samuel Collier of Witney in the County of Oxford Blanket maker and Farmer and William Williams of Weald aforesaid Farmer the Sum of five pounds each for the Trouble which they may have in and about the Execution of the Trusts hereby in them reposed and executing the same And as to all the rest residue and remainder of my real and personal Estate and Effects of what Nature or kind soever which I may die possessed of I give devise and bequeath the same unto my Son William Dutton To hold to him the said William Dutton his Heirs and Assigns for ever (but that the same shall be subject and liable to the Payment of the said Annuities Legacies Debts Costs Funeral Expences and the Expence of proving of this my Will as is hereinbefore mentioned given devised bequeathed and directed by me as aforesaid) And Lastly I hereby nominate constitute and appoint the said Samuel Collier and William Williams Trustees and my Son William Dutton sole Executor to this my last Will and Testament hereby revoking all former and
