• Notes

  My Nana, Ethel Payne grew up in Northamptonshire, the eldest of two daughters born to Arthur Payne and Ann Vorley. Arthur and Ann were active in the Salvation Army in the village of Harpole but Arthur, like the rest of his family, worked in the boot trade alongside being an evangelist. Sadly, Ethel's younger sister, Florence, died of Scarlet Fever when she was just six years old and Ethel was aged nine. Sometime around the turn of the centuary, Arthur, Ann and Ethel moved to Kent and settled in St Mary Cray, where Ethel met my grandfather, James Dutton. They married in 1912 and had five children, Marjorie, Kathleen, Arthur, Raymond (my father) and Trevor. With the outbreak of WW2, Arthur, Raymond and Trevor all enlisted in the army and served overseas. All three survived the war, although Raymond returned home on a hospital ship having contracted Rheumatic Fever. Whilst her three boys were away at war, Ethel suffered the loss of her mother, Ann, in 1940. (She died on February 9th, 20 years to the day before my own birth) and, just one year later, Ethel's husband James, who died of lung cancer. After the war, Trevor came home to Kent only briefly before disappearing. Raymond made attempts to trace him, but unsuccessfully. Trevor was only eventually traced in Plymouth after his own death. Ironically Trevor and Arthur both died in August 1995, some 24 years after Raymond's death at the age of 49. Ethel died in 1954 at the age of 68 at Green Street Green, six years before I was born.
